English Department Essay
Contests
The English Department is pleased to
announce the 2007-2008 essay contests.
Essays submitted in classes during the
calendar year March 2007 to March 2008 are eligible. The deadlines
for entries is March 21, 2008! (Papers may be turned in early,
e.g. at the end of Semester I.) Instructors should encourage students
to submit papers for the contests and may go over the papers with the
students. Instructors should submit the papers for the freshman and
literary essay contests to the department chair and may submit up to
three papers from each section or course. (Papers for the Ferlini
Prize are submitted by students directly to the English Department
Chair.)

- Papers written in Honors 180 and upper
division English courses (day division) are eligible. Every paper
should have a title. Minimum length is six pages. Papers may or
may not have secondary sources. Students should follow the style
the instructor of the course has indicated, but no name should
appear on the paper. Papers should be identified by social
security number. (Please submit another sheet with name and social
security number.) The winners will receive cash
prizes.

- Any paper written in English 100 or
English 101 (day division) is eligible. Every paper should have a
title. Students should follow manuscript form indicated in the
text for freshman English. No name should appear on the paper, and
students should turn in a separate sheet with name and social
security number. The winner will be awarded the Major General John
Dillon Prize ( a cash prize), and the winner's name will be placed
on a wall plaque.

- This contest is open to all students, day
and extended programs, above the freshman level. Students may
submit one non-fiction essay (limit = one per student) on any
subject. The paper should not have been submitted to any other
contest on campus. There is one cash prize for an outstanding
essay and citations for finalists or runners-up. Papers should be
a minimum of five pages, typed and double-spaced with only the
student's social security number appearing on the paper. Students
should turn in a separate sheet with their full name, social
security number, address and phone number. Students should give
their essays to the English Department Chair.
